Agnes Schmelzer was born March 19, 1905 in Fillmore County near Henrytown to Martin and Tillie (Haug) Huseby.

She was baptized and confirmed at the Henrytown Lutheran Church. She attended the Henrytown School and then graduated from the Harmony High School in 1924.

After a year of teacher's training in Harmony, she began teaching in the area country schools in 1926. She taught until 1938 when she married Charles Schmelzer in Austin, Minn.

She took a few years off until the late 1940's while she raised their two sons, Clair and Paul. They farmed her family's farm and were the third generation.

They milked Jersey and Guernsey cows and raised hogs and chickens. In the late 1940s she began teaching again along with helping on the farm.

In the 1960s she attended summer classes at the Winona State University and at the age of 60 graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1965. The last few years of her teaching career were at the North Winneshiek School.

Agnes Schmelzer continued to live on the farm after her husband's death in 1982 until she moved into Harmony.

In 1997 she became a resident at Harmony Healthcare and had resided there since. She was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church in Canton.
Agnes Schmelzer was preceded in death by her husband; an infant brother, two sisters: Nora in 1914 and Blanche in 1987; and a brother Leo in 1997.
