Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was enrolled in the 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 26, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in Company D on September 13, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably mustered out on July 27, 1863. Later in the war he re-enlisted, and served as a Private in Company B, 1st United States Regular Cavalry.
After the war he moved to San Francisco, where he was emploted as a Private Watchman. He married his wife, Mary A, in 1869, and they had 5 children - Charles H., William E., George S. Jj, Mary Jr. and Jack.
