Amos then married Cornelia Sylvema Abernethy on 9 Nov 1865 in Knox County, Illinois, the Rev. Henry C Abernethy officiating. This was Cornelia's cousin. They were also blessed with four children: Nellie Abernethy Ward, Fred Franklin Ward, Edith Mary Ward, and George Amos Ward.
Amos moved to Illinois around 1845, and settled in Walnut Grove Township, Knox County, and his livlihood was farming. When Cornelia died, he took up residence with his son George, until the Lord called him home.
