He married Margaret Gentles,in Scotland, on March 10, 1842. They came to United States sometime later and were pioneers in state of Wisconsin and the Winona, Minnesota areas. In 1852 an epidemic caused the death of Mrs. Taylor and four of their five children (LaCrosse, Wisconsin)
On November 7, 1854, he married Janet Gentles, the sister of his deceased wife. Robert and Janet had seven children: James S., T.B., William W., Robert, Benjamin F., Nellie S. and Jessie A.
