LOUDON — Mary Eastman Smith (Mrs. John J.) Baggenstoss, 99, passed away Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at Loudon Health Care Center.

Born Dec. 28, 1904, in Rutherford County, Tenn., she was the oldest and the only surviving child of the late Dr. Sidney B. Smith and Lucy Carr Currey Smith.

Mrs. Baggenstoss graduated from MTSU and taught school in Rutherford County and at Grundy County High School, Tracy City, Tenn., where she met Mr. Baggenstoss. They were married in 1931 at Salem Methodist Church, Overall, Tenn.

She was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, Tracy City, and later Trinity Episcopal Church, Winchester, Tenn., serving as a member of the Altar Guild, ECW, vestry and as church historian. She was employed as bookkeeper for Dutch-Maid Bakery for more than 36 years. She was a member of DAR, National Society of Magna Carta Dames and Retired Teachers Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Baggenstoss; sisters, Margaret Brandon, Currey Holloway, Ruth Yeargan and Lucia Muse; and brothers, Sidney, Austin, Duncan, Roger and Leonard Smith.

Survivors include daughter, Jean Cardwell, Loudon; son, John "Jack" and wife, Hope Baggenstoss, Monteagle, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. CDT Saturday, Oct. 30, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Winchester.

The family will hold a graveside service at University Cemetery in Sewanee following the church service.

Memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund at Trinity Episcopal Church, 213 First Ave., N.W., Winchester, TN 37398; or to the Memorial Fund at Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 457, Tracy City, TN 37387.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. CDT Friday at the parish hall of Trinity Episcopal Church in Winchester.
