Enlisted 1 Feb 1864 in Palo Pinto County, Texas. He served with Captain William C. Clayton in Company B, First Frontier District, TST, Commanded by Major William Quail. He attained the rank of lst lieutenant. 1st Lt.

Son of Jonathan Cowden and Mary Watson. Married Ruth Elizabeth Whiteside on 01 Feb 1849 in Calhoun County, Alabama. To this union 10 children were born. Eliza Quintilla, Jonathan, Mary Ann, Martha Caroline, William Frederick, Jefferson Davis, George Franklin Jr, John Thomas, and Edward Walter.
