Charles Grant Lenfest (21 Dec 1868 Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts - 26 Jan 1927 Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts).

Charles Grant Lenfest's father, Solomon Lenfest, Jr (1822 – 1883) and Charles Grant Lenfest's uncle, Thomas Hancock Lenfest, Sr (1824 – 1888) of Cambridge Massachusetts owned an established printing company which was important in cementing family ties. Uncle Thomas specialized in music stenography and printing and Solomon Lenfest, Jr did newspaper printing and publishing. Thomas Hancock Lenfest's daughter, Sarah Ethel Lenfest (1849 – 1920), married George Henry Boyson (1881 – 1920). George Henry Boyson and his brother William L Boyson (1854 – 1924) worked for Riverside Press in Cambridge for over 50 years. The Cambridge newspapers are available online for free courtesy of the Cambridge Public Library. Charles Grant Lenfest passed down his knowledge of movable type layout and music to his daughters and they in turn to their grandchildren. Seeing a printing press in action and understanding type spacing was part of my upbringing.

Charles' father, Solomon Lenfest, Jr married first Nancy Elizabeth Arnold on 13 Nov 1843 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, and they had three children: Amanda Elizabeth Lenfest (1844 – 1902), Harriet Louise Lenfest (1847 – 1923) and Granville M Lenfest (1851 – 1858). Graville died young. His wife and eldest daughter, Amanda, moved to San Francisco, California on 27 Jan 1860 without notice and never contacted Solomon again. His younger daughter Harriet stayed in Cambridge with Solomon. Solomon, Jr and Nancy were divorced on 14 Feb 1865 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts with Nancy in absentia and Solomon pleading a case of spousal abandonment.

Before the divorce Solomon Lenfest, Jr shared a home with his brother and business partner Thomas Hancock Lenfest, Sr (1824 – 1888) and Thomas's wife Harriet B Clark (1825 – 1893) and their two children Sarah Ethel Lenfest (1849 – 1920) and Thomas, Jr. (1851 – 1899).

Solomon Lenfest, Jr and Thomas Hancock Lenfest, Sr hired a recent immigrant to Boston, Samuel Turnbull. Samuel Turnbull's sister Jane Turnbull first married to Solomon Lenfest, Jr's brother, Granville M Lenfest (1828 - 1854), a brass finisher who died at age 27. Graville and Jane had two children Graville Birbedge Lenfest (1852 – 1928) and Ellen F Lenfest (1854 – 1875). Ellen also died young.

After the death of Granville M Lenfest, Solomon Lenfest, Jr married Jane Turnbull. Jane and Solomon, Jr raised Graville's young children and cared for Charles's grandmother, Many Ann (Hancock) Lenfest. Solomon Lenfest Jr and Jane Turnbull had a single son Charles Grant Lenfest, the subject of this memorial.

Samuel Turnbull married Ann Maria Bird. Ann Maria Bird's sister Henrietta E Bird's in turn married James Edward Sampson and they became of the parents of Maria Adela Sampson. Maria Adela Sampson would become Charles Grant Lenfest's future wife.

Charles's father died two days after his fifteenth birthday leaving young Charles Lenfest to raise the family. After a tumultuous childhood Charles Grant Lenfest grew up fast determined to put his family on a more secure path. Charles Grant Lenfest became a securities broker. He cut his teeth as director of the Old Dominion Copper and Mining and Smelting Company, the James Skinner Leather Company as well as the American Hide and Leather Company.

At the zenith of his career he served as Chief Financial Officer at Fitzgerald, Hubbard and Company, a stock exchange on 95 Milk St, Boston, Massachusetts and was one of the four principles of the company who also included William F Fitzgerald, George E Clarkson and Jesse B Hubbard. Before that he was CFO of Towle and Fitzgerald and Leland Towle and Company. He was a member of the board of the Chelsea Trust Company and a member of the board of the Sinking Fund Commissioners for the City of Boston.

But for Charles business was always second to his family. He wanted a happy, healthy upbringing for his four daughters and mother. To that end Charles Grant Lenfest raised his four daughters and cared for his mother Jane on "the farm" where they produced all their own fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy with the help of a large staff. After the stock market crash his four daughters were insulated from the impact because of his careful planning. They fed the large numbers of homeless who came to the back door of their house.

Charles Lenfest's daughters traveled the world together to exotic locals and made friends worldwide. The four daughters were best friends for life and never left each others' side. They were full of humor love and kindness and lived long and healthy lives.

Genealogy:

Charles Grant Lenfest's father was Solomon Lenfest, Jr (15 Aug 1822 Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts - 28 Jan 1883 Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts) the son of Solomon Lenfest Sr (1795 – 1858) and Mary Ann Hancock (1799 – 1885).

Charles Grant Lenfest's mother was Jane Turnbull (Oct 1824 Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada - 10 Jan 1909 Winchester, Middlesex, Massachusetts) the daughter of George Turnbull and Jane Birbridge (also spelled Burbridge on some records, the former is preferred) of England.

On 21 May 1865 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts Charles Grant Lenfest married Maria Adela Sampson (3 Oct 1867 Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts - 14 Aug 1949 Belmont, Middlesex, Massachusetts) the daughter of James Edward Sampson (14 Nov 1839 in Gloucester, Essex, Mass - 30 May 1913 Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass) and Henrietta E Bird (9 Jan 1841 Boston, Suffolk, Mass - 29 Nov 1915 Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass).

Note Henrietta E Bird's sister Ann Maria Bird's married Samuel Turnbull. Samuel Turnbull was the brother of Jane Turnbull who was Solomon Lenfest, Jr's wife. It is not coincidence that Charles Grant Lenfest married Maria Adela Sampson. Remember that Samuel Turnbull worked for Charle's father Solomon Lenfest, Jr in the printing business.

Charles Grant Lenfest and Maria Adela Sampson had four daughters:

1) Evelyn May Lenfest (18 May 1892 Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass – Apr 1985 Goffstown, Hillsborough, N.H.). In 1919 in Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass, Evelyn May Lenfest married Ralph Kenyon Hope (16 Dec 1888 Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass - 31 May 1937 in Everett, Middlesex, Mass) and they had two children: Barbara Hope and Robert "Bob" Hope.

2) Marion Lenfest (Jan 1894 Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass – 2 Jan 1958 Medfield, Norfolk, Mass). Marion Lenfest never married and had no children.

3) Helen F Lenfest (14 Feb 1903 in Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass - 28 Feb 1988 Hyannis, Barnstable, Mass). Helen F Lenfest married Charles A Reisig who was born abt 1889 in New York, New York, New York. I have no other information about Charles Reisig. However, from at least the 1960's onward she was single and lived with her sister Ethel Gertrude "Nana Gert" Lenfest on cape code.

4) Ethel Gertrude "Nana Gert" Lenfest (30 Sep 1898 Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass - 2 Feb 1995 in Nashville, Davidson, Tenn). She went by the name Nana or Gurt. In 1921 in Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass she married first: Captain Roland Henry Baker, Sr (1 May 1897 West Newton, Middlesex, Mass - 27 Jan 1985 Elkins, Merrimack, N.H.) a veteran of World War I and son of Frederic Warren Kidder Baker 8 (1872 – 1941) and Ada Foss 8 (one of the Heavenly Twins, Singer born 1876 –). They had two children together:

a) Col Roland Henry Baker, Jr (10 October 1923 Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass - 12 June 1994 in Nashville, Davidson, Tenn) a aircraft carrier pilot in World War II and the Korean War who received the Distinguished Flying Cross from the President of the United States for his service over the Island of Japan. He married first Cornelia "Connie" Keyworth (1932 – 2013) and had two daughters: Kathryn Ann "Kathy" Baker and Carey Lee Baker. He married second Joan Leonard Chadbourne and had one son Roland Henry Baker III. He adopted Joan's three daughters from a previous marriage: Sivea, Gwyn and Meg Cattelll. He married third Emily Kay Carter, no children with Emily.

b) Jean Baker (7 February 1928 in Belmont, Middlesex, Mass - 21 Feb 2003 Falmouth, Barnstable, Mass) who had three daughters: Robin, Susan and Kim.

In 1930 in Belmont, Middlesex, Mass Ethel Gertrude Lenfest married second Captain Helen F Lenfest (28 Sep 1888 in Beverly, Essex, Mass - 3 Jul 1959 in Everett, Middlesex, Mass) a veteran of World War I and son of William Everett Choate Jr (1864 – 1929) and Susie Frost Herrick (1866 –) and they had one daughter: Dorothy W Choate born 25 Mar 1911 in Salem, Essex, Mass.

Charles Grant Lenfest's pedigree is Charles Grant Lenfest 4 (1868 – 1927), Solomon Lenfest, Jr 3 (1822 – 1883), Solomon Lenfest Sr 2 (1795 – 1858), Peter (Pierre Lenfestey) Lenfest 1 (1739 – 1820).

All Lenfests in the United States are descended from a single immigrant, Pierre Lenfestey of Parish St Pierre du Bois, Isle of Guernsey, Channel Islands, a small island off the coast of France (with the exception of a few families that migrated here from Canada). I have compared DNA from Charles Grant Lenfest's great grandson (myself, I have a degree in molecular genetics from U.C. Berkeley) against current Lenfest family members still living on Isle of Guernsey and we have a close autosomal chromosome match.
