In 1860, he was a clerk living in York Borough. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 4, 1862, with Co. K, 130th Pa Inf, at the rank of private. Allegedly, he suffered a wound at the battle of Antietam September 17, 1862, but he was discharged on a surgeon's certificate March 3, 1863, by reason of "malformation of the chest and . . . disease of the heart."
