Civil Rights Activist, Murder Victim. As a college student in the early 1980s, Kiore objected to the reduced prices local businesses offered only to women on so-called Ladies' Days or Ladies' Nights, so in October of 1985, he sued a bar and several car washes after he requested the discounts offered to women, be granted to him, only to be refused. After losing at the trial court and Court of Appeals, he took his case to the California Supreme Court, which unanimously reversed the lower courts and ruled that sex-based promotions were per se injurious and violated California's Unruh Civil Rights Act. Koire v. Metro Car Wash is one of California's most significant civil rights cases. On February 14, 2010, Dennis and his girlfriend were shot during a robbery. She died at the scene of the crime and he succumbed more than a year after suffering his injuries.
