Al Varner, 75, of Smithfield died Wednesday. He was the son of the late H.T. and Minnie Varner of Raleigh.

Mr. Varner served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 till 1954, seeing action in the Korean War. He retired from Sylvania in Smithfield in 1982 and from Eaton Corp. in Selma in 1993. Mr. Varner was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic men's group. He was a member of American Legion Post 132 in Smithfield, which named him Legionnaire of the Year for 2005. Mr. Varner was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the 40 & 8 and Kiwanis. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and at the food closet in Smithfield.

The funeral was at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 20, at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Park in Smithfield.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Vicky Shehdan Varner; three sons, Mitch Varner of Charlotte, Glenn Varner of Alpharetta, Ga., and Gregg Varner of Smithfield; a daughter, Cindy Baddour of Fuquay-Varina; three sisters, Margaret Groff, Lib Ellington and Dot Bagwell, all of Raleigh; and six grandchildren.

The family received friends from 2 till 4 p.m. and from 6 till 8 p.m. Friday, August 19, at Parrish Funeral Home, 1351 S. Pollock St., Selma. A vigil was held at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family suggested memorial contributions to the Building Fund at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 4057 U.S. 70 Business West, Clayton, N.C. 27520.
