Thomas Cecil "Tom" Hulme, 74, of rural Shelton passed from this life on Thursday, July 24, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Cairo United Methodist Church, Cairo, with the Rev. Jack Bohling officiating.

Inurnment will be at a later date in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Cairo.

Mr. Hulme was born Oct. 17, 1939, at his family's home near Cairo in Hall County, the son of Cecil Herman and Evelyn Leah (Walbrecht) Hulme.

He was baptized at the Cairo United Methodist Church.

Tom grew up in the area and attended Cairo High School, graduating with the class of 1956.

Tom began working at the age of 12 as a farmhand. After graduating from high school, he worked in Iowa for a short time before returning to the Cairo area to farm.

He entered the United States Army on April 18, 1958, and received his honorable discharge Feb. 1, 1960.

Tom enjoyed playing baseball for the Bluff Center and Cairo town teams and played on the Army championship team at Fort Sill, Okla., during his two years in the service. He always played the catcher.

He was united in marriage to Gala Ruth Williams on April 7, 1960, in Lawton, Okla.

The couple made their home near Cairo, where he farmed and enjoyed raising livestock. Also during this time, he managed a local fertilizer plant for almost 20 years.

He was a member of Cairo United Methodist Church, served as chairman of the Cameron Township Board, was a member of the ASCS and served on the Hall County 4-H Board.

He enjoyed Nebraska football and volleyball.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Gala Ruth Hulme of Shelton; his children, Vicki Gaye Stahl of Grand Island, Paula Kaye Hulme of Grand Island, Thomas Cecil Jr. and Joann (Packer) Hulme of Shelton, Mary Beth and Bruce Fischer of Grand Island, and David Boroff of Shelton; a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Fred Harb of Lincoln; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Hulme of Scottsdale, Ariz.; his aunt, Alba Henry of Massillon, Ohio; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Becca and Heather Stahl-Victory, Rachel Stahl, Krystal and Eric Barnacle, Ryan and Kylie Hulme, Tyler and Lindsey Hulme, Hanna Hulme, Daniel Fischer and Levi Fischer; 12 great-grandchildren; Alaina, Aidan, Addison, Kali, Keagen, Destiny, Karlie, Blake, Haedyn, Parker, Mersades and Sydney; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jeanette Behrens and Geraldine Sinner Hill; one brother, James Hulme; and a grandson, David Boroff Jr.
