Thomas David Arant Jr., 92, of Fort Motte, died on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at the Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, at the Arant Family Cemetery in Fort Motte, with the Rev. Suzanne Walker officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence following the service.
Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Thomas was born on Feb. 28, 1921, in Fort Motte, a son of the late Thomas D. and Ruth Johnson Arant. He was a graduate of Clemson College and a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, where he was a flight instructor training B-25 pilots. He was also a member of the Instrument Flying Board of an Advanced Army Training School, where he trained pilots for instrument flying. After the war, Thomas returned home and began a long career as a rural mail carrier, from which he retired after serving both the Fort Motte and Hopkins areas. He also retired from farming family lands. He was an avid ham radio operator and enjoyed communicating with people from all over the world. He was a devoted member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in St. Matthews.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas Murray Arant and his wife Kam, Samuel Anthony Arant, and Alan David Arant and his wife Sherry, all of Fort Motte; four grandchildren, John Thomas, Tina, Austin and Aaron Arant; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1808 Bridge St., St. Matthews, SC 29135.
