Onwood Ross "Red" Griffin was born December 15, 1927, to Beulah Barber and Joshua Thomas Griffin. He grew up in Mackeys, NC, on the shore of the Albemarle Sound, where he swam as a boy and pulled nets with his father as a teenager. He was the devoted husband of Ideal Helms Griffin for 64 years of the residence; proud father of Deborah Branton (Michael) of Deland, Fl, and David Griffin (Tami) of Camden; ardent bleacher fan of grandchildren, Wendy Carpenter of Apex, NC, Abbie Bradley of Greenville, NC, and Joshua Griffin of Camden, NC. He was the older brother of Janet Batton (Don) of Edenton, NC, and Larry Griffin (Cathy) of Henderson, KY.
Onwood lived a rich and varied life: member, deacon, choir member and church building and grounds worker at Sawyer's Creek Baptist Church, center for the Roper High School basketball team, welder aboard a Navy mine sweeper at the close of WWII, bridge-tender with the Norfolk and Southern Railroad for forty-two years, owner and operator of the Sportsman's Marina on the Camden Causeway for twenty years, member of Camden's Masonic Lodge for fifty years, volunteer firefighter for Camden County Fire Department, stepping-out square dancer, Parks and Rec champion in hearts and table tennis, trophied bowler with a game high of 244, first baseman in the seniors softball league, enthusiastic RVer, accomplished woodworker, Camden County High School Booster Club member and supporter, baseball and softball umpire, and once retired Mall Strider. He leaves behind many friends, an empty porch swing, and a long shadow. Pizza and ice cream sales will notice his passing. Rest in peace.
A memorial service with Masonic Rites will be Friday, July 25, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Sawyer's Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Buzzard officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the church fellowship hall and at other times at the residence, 159 Seymour Drive, Camden, NC. Memorial donations may be made to either the Building fund or the Music Fund of Sawyer's Creek Baptist Church, 241 Sawyer's Creek Road, Camden, NC 27921. Twiford Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is serving the Griffin family. You may express condolences to the family by visiting www.twifordfh.com.
