Born on July 4, 1935 to Frank and Juanita Aldridge. In July 1937 Frank was tragically killed, leaving Juanita to raise Kathryn (6), Joan (5), Neva (2) and Frank Jr (3 months). To provide for her children Juanita worked as a housekeeper, laundress and cook. Because of her dedication to her children and extended family her three daughters grew up to be strong women.

In October 1943 Juanita and her new husband, Luther Hitchcock moved the family to California. After a brief stay in Firebaugh, CA they finally settled in Perkins, Sacramento County, CA.

Neva and her sisters attended Kit Carson Junior High School, then Sacramento High.

In 1951 she attended a dance and that is where she met Robert Latham, a South Carolina native who was stationed at Sacramento Army Depot. They married in Virginia and they spent the next decade traveling wherever the Army sent him, finally settling in Fayetteville, NC. Robert was stationed at Fort Bragg and Neva worked at the base exchange.

Robert and Neva never had any children. Their siblings provided them with many nieces and nephews to spoil. Even though they were 3000 miles from Neva's family she was always there when we needed her. She babysat me when I was a toddler and they tell me that I took her move to the East Coast the hardest. Dad tells me that I cried for days.

In May 1982 Neva was diagnosed with breast cancer. Due to the advance stage of the cancer she went through chemotherapy and radiation in Sacramento. It was during her treatments that Robert suffered a seizure and they discovered that he had a brain tumor. He passed away in October 1982.

After Robert's death Neva decided to go bi-coastal. She lived with her mother in California part of the year and the rest of the year she lived in Fayetteville.

Eventually Neva settled in Sacramento. She lived with her mother and took care of her until her death in 1999. She continued to travel back to see her friends in North Carolina and her in-laws in South Carolina.

Neva was a member of Southpointe Christian Center. She enjoyed volunteering at the church food closet and the neighborhood outreach program. The outreach volunteers spend their Friday and Saturday evenings ministering to the prostitutes and drug dealers in the area. She had no problem stepping between a pimp and a 15 yr old girl that had been walking the street. She convinced the girl to let her contact the girl's parents and the girl was safely returned home.

She wasn't perfect but she was loved and we already miss her.

And you want to know a secret? She kept a stash of Hostess Sno-balls in the drawer of her nightstand.

A special thank you to Big Ern for sponsoring my aunt's memorial
