Edward M. McGroarty, of Dennison Avenue, Wyoming, died Monday at his home.

Born in Mina, Ark., he was a son of the late Michael and Ann (Gallagher)[recte Wray-see mother's obit] McGroarty. He was a graduate of Swoyersville High School. He was a U.S. Air Corps veteran of World War II, retiring as a major. He enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Police in 1938 and was stationed at barracks in Wyoming, Shickshinny, Bethlehem and Harrisburg. He was promoted to captain of Troop `P,' Wyoming, and later to major. He was lieutenant colonel Area II Commander of Western Pennsylvania. He was vice president of security for United Penn Bank, Wilkes-Barre, public relations officer for PG & W. He received the Pennsylvania Meritorious Service Medal for work in disaster relief during the Agnes Flood of 1972 by the Pennsylvania Department of Military Affairs. He was a member of St. Cecilia's Church, Exeter, Back Mountain Trail Riders, Retired State Police Association of Pennsylvania, Fraternal Order of Police, Frank Albert Memorial Lodge 43 and Knights of Columbus, Wilkes-Barre Council 302.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael; and brothers, William, Charles and James.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, the former Jane Hudson; son, Kevin J., West Pittston; sisters, Mary Bacon, Glen Ellen, Ill.; Margaret Schresenghost, New Carrollton, Md.; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Metcalfe & Shaver Funeral Home, Inc., 504 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Cecilia's Church, Exeter. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Kingston Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Cecilia's Church Memorial Fund, 1700 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, 18643.
