(NOTE: On December 1, 1932, of the 992 men who served in the 86th Illinois during the Civil War, only 18 were still living. Corporal Thomas H. Taylor was the last man from old Co. B of the 86th that was still living. When Thomas died on December 11, 1932, all of the men from old Co. B were gone and only 17 remained from the entire regiment
(Thomas H. Taylor probably never had his portrait taken prior to the Civil War. However, during the 10 month period that the 86th Illinois was in the Nashville, Tennessee area in 1862-63, Thomas, like most of the Union soldiers in the Nashville area, probably took the time to sit for a portrait to send home to the loved ones that he left behind. These portraits were printed in the form of what was called a "tin type" or, more often, in the form of what was called a CDV. This was a paper picture glued to a heavier card stock about the size of a modern day baseball card, and the soldiers didn't just have one or two copies made. Most of the time, they had a dozen or more made, so they could swap pictures with their tentmates and messmates and also to send to their friends and loved ones back home.
Thomas H. Taylor then survived the war and lived well into the 20th century. During his life, Thomas probably had his picture taken dozens of times. I would dearly love to see a copy of that CDV added to his Find A Grave site for all with an interest to see. However, at this point, I would be thrilled just to see ANY pictures of him added to his Find A Grave Memorial, even ones of him as an old man. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Baxter)

When Brearley had about 100 volunteers, he led the Marshall County company into Peoria where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, Brearley and 88 of his volunteers, including now Private Thomas H. Taylor, were mustered into service as Co. B of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Brearley was elected Captain of Co. B.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, down to the railroad depot. There they were joined by the men of the 85th Illinois, who had been mustered into service at Camp Peoria. Together, at the depot, the men of the 85th & 86th Illinois boarded trains bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana, located across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky. Three weeks later, the men of the 85th & 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, in pursuit of Confederate troops. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the years to come. After the Battle of Perryville, the Confederate troops withdrew from Kentucky and the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee where they would go into winter camp.
During the next two and a half years, Private Thomas H. Taylor served faithfully in Co. B as the men of the 86th served in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, Thomas was witness to and a participant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chickamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia; Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia and Peach Tree Creek, Georgia, Jonesboro, Georgia, Averasborough, North Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina and may have participated in at least part of Sherman's infamous "March to the Sea."
It appears that sometime in late 1864, that Corporal Thomas H. Taylor was sent back to Central Illinois, perhaps on furlough. During his short stay in Central Illinois, Corporal Thomas H. Taylor was married to Mary Magdalene Richardson in Peoria County, Illinois on December 1, 1864. This would have been during the infamous "March to the Sea", so it is possible that Corporal Thomas H. Taylor may not have participated in this march. Mary Magdalene Richardson was born on October __, 1846, the daughter of James Richardson and Mary (Hart) Richardson. At the time of the 1850 census, the Richardson family is found in Peoria County, Illinois;
James Richardson M 30 Ohio
Mary Richardson F 32 Ireland
Martha I Richardson F 8 Ohio
William J Richardson M 7 Illinois
Abigal Richardson F 5 Illinois
Mary M Richardson F 3 Illinois
James T Richardson M 1 Illinois
Alfred Mc Kennay M 22 Virginia
Mary Shepherd F 16 Kentucky

At some point during the war, Private Thomas H. Taylor was also elected and promoted to Corporal as a sign of his dedication to service, to the men of Co. B and as a sign of his military bearing. After the war came to a close, the surviving members of the 86th that were still with McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington City (now D.C.) where they were mustered out of the service on June 6, 1865. They were soon on a train bound for Chicago, Illinois, where they received their final pay and were discharged. By the end of June of 1865, the surviving members of the 86th Illinois were back home in Central Illinois.

During the week of August 27, 1887, the 25th Anniversary of the mustering in of the old 86th back in 1862, a reunion was held in Peoria, Illinois. More than 130 veterans of the 86th and their families attended this 1st reunion of the 86th since the war. It was such a hit, that they decided to hold them every year on the anniversary in Peoria as long as the veterans could attend. The reunions grew for several years as more and more veterans were located and they contunied to be held every through the year 1923, when it was tearfully decided by the 22 veterans of the 86th who were able to attend that reunion, that they getting to be too old and too few to continue them after that 1923 reunion. So when the they parted ways after singing "God Be With You Till We Meet Again", the last earthly reunion of the old 86th was over.
It is not known when Thomas H. Taylor was located, but it had be to be pretty early as Corporal Thomas H, Taylor was one of 13 veterans of cold Co. E to attend the 1889 reunion. This proved, however, to be the only reunion that he would ever attend. The great distance he had to travel and the cost of difficulty in making those trips in the late 1800's and early 1900's undoubtedly playing a part. The men of Company B, however, never did get into the reunions like the men from the other companies did, for some unknown reason. The 13 veterans of Co. E that attended the 1889 reunion was the most that ever attended any reunion. Seven Co. E men attended the 1896 reunion and there were only 7 more reunion where more than 4 Co. E men were in attendance. Corporal Thomas H. Taylor was believed by the surviving members of the 86th to have resided in Indianola, Iowa until about 1889 and then in Jamestown, North Dakota until about 1894.

At the time of the 1900 Federal Census, Thomas and his family are found in Jamestown, Stutsman Co., North Dakota, living on Pittsburgh Avenue North;
Thomas H. Taylor, age 63, b. May 1837, immigration 1847, Traveller Com.
Mary M. Taylor, age 53, b. Oct 1846 - 7 children/7 living
Thad E. Taylor, age 32, b. Oct 1867
Mabel G. Taylor, age 26, b. Apr 1874
Millard T. Taylor, age 17, b. Nov 1882
Mildred F. Taylor, age 14, b. Sep 1885

At the time of the 1910 Federal Census, Thomas and his family are found in Spokane Ward 4, Spokane, Washington
Thomas H Tayla, age 73, immigration 1848, occupation none
Mary M. Tayla, age 63, 7 children/6 living
Mabel G. Tayla, age 35

In November of 2013, John Blair wrote, "While I have nothing new on Thomas Taylor, his first wife, Mary Magdeline (Richardson) Taylor died on the 1st of Feb. 1914 in Colville, Stevens Co. Washington. One of her grandaughters was born in Stevens Co., and 2 children were in the Spokane/Stevens area around that time."
Mary Magdalene (Richardson) Taylor's mortal remains were laid in the Tacoma Cemetery in Tacoma Cemetery in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. See her Find A Grave Memorial# 143407196.

After Mary's passing, Thomas H. Taylor is known to have been a resident of the Orting Soldiers Home & Colony in Orting, Washington for some years. At the time of the 1920 Federal Census, Thomas is found residing in the Orting Soldiers Home in Pierce, Washington;
Thomas H Taylor, age 82, widowed

Sometime in the 1920's or very early 1930's, it appears that Corporal Thomas H. Taylor was married. The records of the Washington State Digital Library state that he died on December 11, 1932 in Orting, Pierce County, Washington. However, his pension records state that Corporal Thomas H. Taylor died on December 11, 1932 in Grandview, Yakima County, Washington at the age of 95. So whether he died as a resident of the Orting Soldiers Home or in Grandview, Washington is not known. At the time of his passing, his spouse is listed as K. E. Taylor.
On June 18, 2012, Carol Dorward sent me an email that states, "I noticed you think his wife was a K. E. There is a Thomas H. Taylor and Katherine E. Taylor listed as "inmates" in 1930 in the Veterans home in Kitsap County, Washington. Thomas is listed as 92 years of age and Katherine E. is listed as 83. If this is the correct Thomas, then he immigrated to the US in 1847--at least, that's what that census record states."

As stated above, in 1930 Thomas H. Taylor is found as in inmate at Veterans Home in Kitsap County, Washington. He is 92 and listed as married and both parents were born in England. Immigration Year - 1847.

Bonnie Chrey, of the King County Historical Society in Seattle did a lot of research for me. On August 31, 2012, I received the following email;
"I have done some further checking (I am also waiting to hear back from Retsil) on Thomas Taylor and wife Katherine. I checked the digital archives for WA and find the death record for Thomas - it says he died at Orting. There is a veterans home there too, and I spoke with someone in the office that did some checking for me. If you go out to the site digitalarchives.wa.gov you can search on records for both. The gal at the Orting office and I were on the phone and she said to check military records (which I hadn't done before). I had just looked at death records. There is an application by him for entry to Orting in May of 1932. I think I found his wife died in 1939 in Eastern Wa (Medical Lake). I noticed on his application that he had 6 children, and Katherine is his second wife. The person at Orting checked their cemetery records and does not find him listed. She did say that the town of Orting has a cemetery too. I can try to locate someone to help with searching their records. Since he had 6 children, he may very well be buried in a town of one of them."

In October of 2013, Valerie (Johnson) Freeman, FindAGrave Contributor ID #46892856, of Tustin, California looked into the situation and sent me the following information as well as linking a copy of his Pension record to his Find A Grave site;
"Thomas H. Taylor, of Co. B died on December 11, 1932
I think he died in Orting, Pierce, Washington - not Yakima:

On the bottom of the Pension Card we see that the man recognized by the government as being the Thomas H. Taylor, who served in Co. B of the 86th Illinois, died on December 11, 1932, but they do have his death occurring in Tacoma, Washington.

At the time of the 1900 Federal Census, Thomas and his family are found in Jamestown, Stutsman Co., North Dakota, living on Pittsburgh Avenue North;

Mabel G. Taylor, age 26, b. Apr 1874
Millard T. Taylor, age 17, b. Nov 1882

At the time of the 1910 Federal Census, Thomas and his family are found in Spokane Ward 4, Spokane, Washington
Thomas H Tayla, age 73, immigration 1848, occupation none
Mary M. Tayla, age 63, 7 children/6 living

After Mary's passing, Thomas H. Taylor is known to have been a resident of the Orting Soldiers Home & Colony in Orting, Washington for some years. At the time of the 1920 Federal Census, Thomas is found residing in the Orting Soldiers Home in Pierce, Washington;

Bonnie Chrey, of the King County Historical Society in Seattle did a lot of research for me. On August 31, 2012, I received the following email;

In October of 2013, Valerie (Johnson) Freeman, FindAGrave Contributor ID #46892856, of Tustin, California looked into the situation and sent me the following information as well as linking a copy of his Pension record to his Find A Grave site;
