I met Steve around the end of 1978 when we both volunteered to help work on a new community center across from the Colosseum in Phoenix. Steve helped me in hanging some paneling. Thereafter he always referred to me as "the carpenter" whenever he heard my voice. We worked out at the same gym, and attended some of the same social gatherings over the next few years.

Though he lived in a world of perpetual darkness, Steve was fearless in negotiating the sighted world around him. He needed no other help than his cane. On my way to work I occasionally saw him waiting at a bus stop near where he lived. I was always impressed by his courage.

Enjoy the light and color of your new world Steve!
