In 1929, Fr. Michael Murphy became the first priest to live at the Carmel Mission since Fr. Jose Maria del Real left in 1845. Fr. Murphy probably lived in the building built by Jo Mora as a residence for visiting priests (now the Downie Museum).

In 1933 Fr. Murphy was Parish priest in Gonzales where he was active in building the new St. Theodore's church which was dedicated in Dec 1948.

He died in 1949 age 70. Instant Death for Gonzales parish priest in Gonzales when dressed in black he was hit by an Auto on US 101, the driver didn't see him and was not cited. The crosswalk at the intersection was dark and not lit. ( Tues. night at 7:30)

The brass plate on the headstone reads "Rev. Michael C. Murphy, 1879-1949, Blessed are they who die in the Lord".

He is in the baptismal records 10 years before his birth date! i.e. 2 Oct 1869. He arrived in the USA in 1893. He also served the Diocese of Fresno in Dos Palos, Coalinga and Fresno. In the diocese of Monterey he was in Watsonville, Tres Pinos, Carmel and Gonzales.
