In 2004 I did not need another dog. I had Sadie and I was happy with her. So I don't know why I decided to surf the internet for adoptable dogs. The first picture that popped up was a little white face with big pointed ears and an expression that seemed to ask "Are you my mom?" He was from over an hour away, but for some reason he was being brought to an adoption event the next day right down the road from me. I tried to talk myself out of going all night, but the next morning I was up before the alarm. I brought Eddie home with me that day and he was the sweetest little thing for exactly two days. On the third day he dropped the act. Eddie was mean, aggressive, too protective and intolerant of most humans and other animals. Eddie had to sleep touching me and would growl at me if I moved in bed. He was the master manipulator, the great actor and the worst dog I ever had. Needless to say, I loved him like no other.

A little over a year ago, Eddie was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. Together we started fighting. I paid for the vet bills for the three expensive medications that he needed three times a day and he fought to stay around because he was still in charge and not ready to surrender.

Today the fight ended and my heart is broken. I know that I will miss him forever. I will miss his attitude, I will miss the way he demanded everything be on his terms, I will miss the way he tried to take gum out of my mouth and how he chose to chew on my hand rather than his toys. I will miss how he would wake me up every morning with a nose punch to my face and I will miss the way he completely ruled the world while he was here. I lost my best friend today, my little man, my buddy, my baby, my boy. Danny has lost his first boy. Grandma and Grandpa lost their grand-dog. Aunt Pam has lost her white devil. Aunt Sheila has lost her loveseat companion. Harley has lost his only brother and Sadie has lost her lifelong counterpart and mate.

Please say a prayer for those of us who loved him.
