Son of Dr. William and Elizabeth (nee Cranfield) Abbott, Richard was born at Maryborough (Portlaoise) in 1833 and baptised there on the 13th of October that same year.

In 1856, Richard graduated from University of Glasgow Medical College, and on 27 August of that year, London's 'Morning Chronicle' newspaper announced he had been stationed to Bengal as Assistant-Surgeon, H.E.I.C.

He married Eliza Phoebe Hennessey at Rewa, Madhya Pradesh (then Bengal), India. She died at nearby Nagod on 01 January 1863 and was interred there, leaving no known children from this union.

Richard next married Elizabeth Sarah Theodosia Milsom, eldest daughter of surgeon George Page Harriott Milsom and the recent widow of Asst. Surgeon Michael Banbury, at Kamptee, India on 15 July 1867.

During his career with H.M. India Service, Dr. Abbott was Surgeon, Sanitary Commissioner, Inspector-General of Jails and Dispensaries; and Superintendent of Vaccinations. He served at Hyderabad, Nagpur, and elsewhere in the Bengal Presidency and the Central Provinces.

After retirement, he returned to his native land. Dr. Abbott died at his residence in Duncairn Terrace, Bray.
