Born inside of the Phillips House Hotel on the corner of Third and Main St. in Dayton, Ohio. Her father was the manager of the hotel and the family lived in the managers apartment inside the hotel. Her father was manager there for 35 years or more. She was born in the same bed that Abraham Lincoln had slept in when he came to Dayton in 1859. She loved to ride horses and was very good at it and won many trophies and ribbons. Graduated from Saint Mary the Woods college in Indiana. Then went to Cambridge College in England for a year with her little brother Eddie. After the year traveled in Germany to Wallenhorst to visit her grandfather Henry Beckman's family who lived on a farm in Wallenhorst. Loved to travel and had been to Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Italy and to Asia to see elephant fights and also ride an elephant. In her early 30's wrote a column for the Dayton Daily News paper. Around 1935 was sent to German and was based out of the American Embassy there. Was listed as a special correspondent for the Dayton News paper. Spoke four languages. On her trips home she reported her findings to former Ohio Governor James Cox who had once run for U.S. President with Franklin Roosevelt as his Vice President. They lost to Harding and Coolidge. By the early 1940's she was transferred to the American Embassy in Madrid, Spain where she dressed as a Catholic Nun to go into occupied France to find downed American Pilots. After the war worked for Catholic Relief Services and was put in charge of the countries of France and Spain was awarded the St. Vincent DePaul medal by the country of France and The Mundlan award by the Catholic Church. In 1946 married Robert Emmit Garrity of Boston. Soon the moved to Northeast Harbor, Maine on Mount Desert Island where they built a beautiful home in the woods over looking Somes Sound. She had a large garden and loved fresh flowers in her home and the smell of the salt air from the near by Atlantic Ocean. Her brother Eddie built a summer home near by. Love to have cook outs along side the ocean with a bon fire to boil lobster and cook corn. Was a very giving person to her community. Her life is detailed in the 2009 book "Lucky Eddie" about the life of her brother but she is talked about as much as he is in the book. She went to Siesta Key Florida in the winters during old age. Died in Dayton, Ohio in a retirement home and her body was cremated taken back to Maine and the ashes scattered on Beech Hill mountain over looking Long Pond where she and her husband use to picnic. Never had any children , but was dearly loved by all who knew her.
