David was a former U.S. Army sergeant who stole nuclear intelligence while working as a machinist at Los Alamos, New Mexico. He testified that he passed the secrets to his sister and brother-in-law, Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, who then passed the secrets to the Soviet Union. The conviction and execution of the Rosenbergs for passing the secrets to the Soviet Union rested largely on the testimony of David and his wife Ruth.
During an interview many years after his release from prison, David claimed that he lied during his testimony to save his wife from prosecution, stating that his wife was more important to him than his sister. He reasoned that his sister sealed her fate by refusing to cooperate with authorities. Ruth also testified against the Rosenbergs in exchange for immunity from prosecution. For his role in the conspiracy, David served almost 10 years of a 15 year sentence after which he rejoined his wife and their two children under assumed names in Queens, New York.
David is buried in Mt Hebron Cemetery next to his wife Ruth. They had both changed their surnames from Greenglass to Grenell.
