FLORA MAY, 63, ACTIVE IN CIVIC AFFAIRS, DIES
Funeral Services Are Conducted Tuesday For Widely Known Woman

Funeral services for Mrs. Flora Lucille May were conducted Tuesday afternoon at Clearfield Tabernacle with interment in Siloam Cemetery.

Mrs. May was 63 years of age, being born July 11, 1895 in Rowan County, daughter of the late Dr. James Benton Messer and Elizabeth (Egan) Messer.

Early in life she married Arthur Stewart and they became the parents of a son, Arthur Stewart, Jr., who is in the photography business in Morehead. Later she married Wiley May, who survives. Her husband conducts a welding and repair shop. Mrs. May was very active in civic affairs of the community.

Besides her husband, she leaves her mother and four sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Cora Frye, Bedford, Pennsylvania; Mrs. Margaret Schickle, Louisville; Mrs. Marie Caudill and Mrs. Lillian Astor, Washington, District of Columbia; Dr. Roscoe Messer, Garrett; Oscar Messer, Bluestone, and Joe Messer, Morehead.

The history of her family covers the pioneer life of Rowan County in which they played an important part.

Mrs. May was a member of many organizations to which she devoted considerable, effort, including Christian Church, Eastern Star, White Shrine and Rebekah Lodge.

Funeral services were conducted by Reverends B. W. Moore and Walter Gilkison.

Casket bearers were: John Will Holbrook, Jack Waggoner, B. F. Penix, Jack Sloan and Russell Barker. Honorary bearers included: J. H. Miles, Deward Evans, C. O. Leach, J. M. Cassity, J. H. Powers, C. P. Duley, W. T. Garey, Randy Wells, Elva Barker, Earl McBrayer, Lindsay Caudill, C. F. Kesler, A. D. Coleman, Clyde Bruce, Dolphia Day, Jr., George I. Cline, Franklin Blair and H. G. Vencill.

Stucky and McBrayer Funeral Home cared for arrangements.

We wish to take this means of expressing our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all those who were so kind and thoughtful during the long illness, death and funeral of our loved one. Moore and Ted Greene, the singers, members of the Order of Eastern Star and Rebekahs, Stucky and McBrayer Funeral Home, those who sent flowers and food and all others who helped in any way.

Mrs. Flora Messer May, a resident of Morehead, passed away Saturday, September 13, 1958 in her 63rd year.

She was the beloved wife of Wiley May, the devoted mother of Arthur Stewart; the daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Messer; and the sister of Mrs. Cora Frye, Mrs. George Schickle, Mrs. Lillian Aster, Dr. Roscoe, Oscar and Joe Messer.

Her remains were taken to the Stucky and McBrayer Funeral Home, Morehead, Kentucky, for services Tuesday, September 16. Interment will be in Brown Cemetery.
