John Peter Baer, 80, of 101 E street, well-known printer and musician here for more than 50 years, died suddenly last night at his home.

Mr. Baer retired about 11 o'clock last night, suffered a heart seizure while in bed and was dead when a doctor arrived.

He was pronounced dead at 11:45.

He was among LaPorte's foremost amateur musicians. An accomplished baritone horn player, Mr. Baer was a member of the City band for 56 years, and had served as secretary and treasurer of the AFL musicians' union here for 51 years, being a charter member.

In Circus Band

He followed the trade of printing throughout his life, but music was a hobby to which he devoted much time and effort.

Before the turn of the century he played in a circus band in Chicago, and until his retirement from music this year he had served as a member and for 10 years captain of the Oriental Shrine band of the South Bend Scottish Rite.

In earlier life he worked as a printer for the Argus-Bulletin company, publishers of the LaPorte Argus, and he continued with the Service Printing company here during a span of 54 years. He retired in 1954.

Lifelong Hoosier

Mr. Baer was born Oct. 9, 1875, in Mulberry, Ind., to Louis and Elizabeth (Karp) Baer. He came to LaPorte April 30, 1900, and lived here the remainder of his life.

He was married June 19, 1903, in LaPorte to Alvena Meinke, who died in 1943. On April 21, 1944, he was married to Della Winchell, who survives.

Mr. Baer was a member of the Presbyterian church here; Exelsior lodge No. 41, F. and A. M., LaPorte Chapter No. 15, R.A.M., LaPorte Council No. 32 of the R. and S. M.; LaPorte Commandery No. 12, K. T.

Active in Masonry

He was past grand prelate of the State of Indiana Grand Commandery, member of the Knights of York Cross of Honor Scottish Rite of South Bend; a past patron of the LaPorte Chapter, O. E. S., and a member of the Elks, Knights of Pythia and Maccabees, and of the International Typographical union.

Survivors include his wife; one nephew, Gerald Baer, Lafayette, Ind., and one niece, Mrs. Everett Young of Lafayette. A daughter, Janis Marguerite, passed away in 1926.

Funeral services will be Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Otto E. Giese Funeral Home with the Rev. Calvin W. Didier officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery.
