William Gore “Bill” Campbell

A celebration of the life of William Gore “Bill” Campbell will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 11, 2014 at Blue Starr Church of Christ.

Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Rice Funeral Service.

Bill passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2014. He was 100.

Bill was born on February 6, 1914 in Stilwell, OK to Albert and Mary Bell (Starr) Campbell.

Bill was raised and educated in several Oklahoma communities.

One fateful day Bill met a beautiful young lady in his father’s grocery store and said that someday he would marry that girl.

They became high school sweethearts and on January 1, 1932 Bill married the love of his life, Mary Agnes Pittsenbargar in a ceremony in Holdenville, OK. Their union was blessed with four children.

Bill worked as a sales manager for Wire Rope Corporation and lived in Texas for 20 years before being transferred to Tulsa and moving to Claremore in 1971.

Bill was a hard worker but his passion was poetry. He influenced many people with his poetry but the most special person for whom he wrote was Mary. Every wedding anniversary since 1932 he wrote her a new poem expressing his devotion and undying love for her.

In 2006 the two lovebirds won 2nd place at the Tulsa State Fair for their commitment in marriage that at the time was 73 years.

Actively involved in the Blue Starr Church of Christ, many of Bill’s poems would appear on the monthly newsletter that was sent to the congregation.

A compassionate person, Bill spent much of his time helping widows, orphans and those who could not help themselves.

As a volunteer for the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, he helped feed the hungry. He was also a big proponent of the Claremore Meals on Wheels.

Active his whole life, Bill enjoyed bowling and was still bowling at the age of 99.

This loving father and grandfather will be missed by all who knew him.

Bill is survived by his children William Campbell and wife Anne of Claremore, Mary Lou Colbert and husband Jess of Claremore, Carolyn Mantos of Mounds and Stanley Campbell and wife Barbara of Enid; 8 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 15 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife 77 years, Mary Campbell, his parents and his siblings.
