Burt was born in Shelbyville, Indiana but at an early age moved to Aurora, Indiana, graduating from Aurora High School in 1943. He entered the U.S. Navy where he served during WWII as a signalman on a battleship. He never did marry.

After his Navy stint, he returned to Indiana where he attended Indiana University graduating in 1951 with a B.S. degree in Business. He worked as an accountant for Frontier Airlines and later for his brother-in-law, Thomas Meyer at the Pinetop Country Store in Pinetop, Arizona.

When Tom sold his business, Burt retired and moved to Phoenix where he spent his time doing volunteer work for many organizations. Besides his volunteer work, he enjoyed tracking and investing in stocks, leaving a large portfolio at the time of his death.
