Nathaniel Shatswell' (Joshua* George/ George/ Jonathan/ John/ William'), b. 10 January, 1810, at Haverhill, Mass.; d. 2 February, 1874, at Cambridge; m. 29 October, 1834. at Pittsfield, Emily Pomeroy; b. 13 November, 1811, at Pittsfield; d. 9 November, 1867, at Washington, D. C. He studied at Philips Academy and at Dartmouth College; was afterward principal of Maplewood Institute, Pittsfield, Mass. He was one of the United States commissioners to the World's Fair in London in 1851, and lived in London from 1851 to 1861; saw some service as an army quarter master, 1862 to 1866, and was afterward clerk in one of the departments at Washington. At the time of his death he was president of the Papyrus club, an organization of literary men in Boston. He was a voluminous contributor to periodicals under the pen name of "John Carver, Esq.," and published "Stories of a Grandfather About American History," Boston, 1873.

i. George Pomeroy, b. 26 Jan. 1838, at Pittsfield; m. Harriette Elizabeth Grandopati (nee Maddock), of Great Neck, N. Y.
ii. Mary Shatswell, b. 27 Jan., 1840, at Pittsfield; d. 3 July, 1888.
iii. Theodoke Atraclt, b. 28 May, 1842, at Pittsfield, Mass.
iv. Lemuel Pomeroy, b 24 July. 1849, at Pittsfield; m. Mary (Post) Ruthven; res. in Chicago.
