Robert was the son of Edward Heckel and Mary Hayes. On 18 Oct 1997 he married Bethany Yates; they had no children. Robert worked in the University of Louisville's A&S Dean's Office. He died of cancer at the age of 42.

Brian enjoyed nothing better than a healthy debate about politics, literature, media or philosophy. He despised inequity and defended the defenseless. Brian enjoyed the beach, bourbon, brews and bands.He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Bethany, and their dog, Guinness; parents Ed and Mary; sister Kari (Josh) Schaudt; in-laws Bill and Sharon Yates; sister-in-law Amanda (Aaron) Miller and nephews Nicholas, Nathan and niece Natalie; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and friends whose lives are left quieter and less interesting without him.
