Birth name is Edgar Jackson Halsey, but often used alias as Jackson, Jack, J. E., or Jackson E. which appears upon his tombstone.

Draft documents state he was born somewhere near Mouth of Wilson, in the Volney, Va. area, but there isn't any birth certificate or family Bible proof. A 1911 county census states his father and family lived at Major, Va. (no longer exists).

His formal education was at Pine Branch School, elementary level, near Major, Grayson County, Va. Edgar was baptized by the Baptist faith at Pine Branch Baptist Church. Subsequently, his parents attended religious services at Fox Creek Primitive Baptist Church. His father, Joseph Melvin Halsey, mother, Nancy Caroline Rutherford, and Phina, his 4 year old sister, are interred in this church's cemetery.

He and his brother-in-law, cousin-in-law and best friend, Staley Anderson, sometimes traveled to the West Virginia coal mines to work as carpenters.

Edgar married Minnie Ann Jones on July 9, 1911. The same year and before their marriage, Minnie's grandparents, Granville and July Ann Cress Jones died on the same day, March 20, 1911 by cause or causes unknown.

Edgar and Minnie's Family:
Minnie Ann Jones Halsey, wife b) June 3, 1891 m) July 9, 1911; d) July 7, 1912
Infant Daughter b) July 5, 1912 Grayson County, Va. - July 5, 1912 (d)
Infant Son b) July 5, 1912 Grayson County, Va. - July 30, 1912 (d)

Infant daughter died same day as born. Minnie died 2 days later likely from a ruptured uterus or organ damage. It was 2 days before the couple's 1st anniversary. Their infant son died 25 days after birth. All 3 are interred at New Hope Methodist Church, Flat Ridge/Barton Crossroads, Grayson County, Virginia.

Edgar began using derivative names of Jackson Edgar, J. E., Jackson, or Jack.

Edgar began courting Isabel Rachel Anderson, a cousin to Staley Anderson. Isabel's father, Timothy Anderson owned his grandfather and father's grist and sawmill along Middle Fox Creek in Grayson County, Va after a lawsuit settlement with his mother, Rachel Cobb Anderson. Timothy soon built a larger mill downstream. He converted his grandfather's mill into a sawmill and woodcraft shop to make furniture and coffins.

December 4, 1914, Edgar with his former in-laws oldest son, Walter, briefly owned and operated a dry goods store selling clothing, boots and shoes in Major. These 2 partners "leased to purchase" the business and rented the store from A. J. Forrester, a shyster. The contract was so lopsided they couldn't take any income or earn any profit. Don't confuse this store with Edgar's sister, Mintie's Barton Crossroads store and garage business.

James Alexander Hash, aka Big Alex, married Edgar and Isabel on December 13, 1914, as he did for Edgar and Minnie on July 9, 1911 over 3 years before, in his Flat Ridge, Grayson County, Va. home. Only the fathers of the bride and groom signed as witnesses at both weddings.

Edgar, as J. E. Halsey, bought 35 acres on February 12, 1915 by deed along the north bank of New River east of Mouth of Wilson on the NW corner beginning at Anderson Ford, Grayson County, Va. before briefly living in Williamson, W. Va. His final move was to Eubank (Science Hill) in the Texas community of Pulaski County, Kentucky.

J. A. Ball sent a demand letter dated April 15, 1916 to Noah and Walter Jones for back mortgage payments owed by Forrester. Noah Jones, Walter and Minnie's father, had acquired Edgar's ownership share. Forrester had not paid any loan payments for the Major dry goods store's mortgage debt owed. Apparently, Noah paid Ball because Walter and he continued the business several more years. Walter abandoned the store to become an automobile mechanic in Troutdale. Forrester had already fled a second time to Washington state to live with an unrelated family and years later he died there. Noah continued to own and operate the store and farm until his death.

Isabel gave birth at home to her first 2 children, Jones Anderson in Grayson County and Rose Annie near Volney, Grayson County, Va. Edgar continued to farm his parcel at Anderson Ford on New River and his father's land around Major, Va. Next, he moved his young family to Williamson, W. Va. There is no subsequent deed of sale for his 35 acres recorded at the Grayson County, Va. County Clerk and Recorder office.

On May 25, 1918, he and Isabel purchased 75.1 acre farm land at Eubank, Kentucky on Indian Creek's intersection with Bull Road (Ky Hwy 452) from V. M. and Nannie W. Doolin. They moved onto their farm sometime in 1919, presumably March 19, as stated by Hazel Halsey Eakins based upon her memories of Edgar's stories.

The 3 notes for $1273.00 each that secured by deed the Anderson Ford parcel were paid in full then unencumbered by C. E. Wingate on September 8, 1919. The cancelled notes are after he and family moved to Kentucky. It may suggest a later move than Hazel's statement.

J. E. was ordained as a youth minister on March 19, 1921 by a 3-0 vote by Eden Baptist Church's leadership, Eubank, Ky. (founded 1867). It still stands 3 miles from the original Halsey farmstead.

Subsequently, Jackson and James Smith were co-founders of the McKinney Missionary Baptist Church, Science Hill, Ky. James's wife, Rhoda A Burton Smith was a charter member, too. This church was a few miles southwest of Edgar's farm and west of Eden Baptist Church. Both men are buried in the McKinney church's adjoining cemetery.

Edgar and Isabel had 11 children:

Jones Anderson Halsey (92) October 27, 1915, Grayson County, Va (b); January 31, 2008 Hendricks County, In (d)
