Correction: He was the first appointed marshal of Deadwood Gulch by Judge Kuykendall on August 2, 1876. His appointment was for the purpose of holding Jack McCall until his trial the next day for the murder of Wild Bill Hickok in Deadwood. He was killed on or about August 20, 1876 while with his posse hunting for the killers of Preacher Smith that day between Deadwood and Spearfish. Ike, as he was known was one of the first pioneers to arrive in Deadwood Gulch in April of 1876, and also established a grocery store in Deadwood.
