Mrs. Kate Maria (Gilfeather) Newton, 98, formerly of 82 High St., died Sunday morning at Thompson House, where she had been a patient two years. The widow of Julius Newton, she was one of two surviving widows of Civil War veterans in Vermont. Mr. Newton died in 1915. She was born Aug. 26, 1872 in West Wardsboro, daughter of Felix and Maria (Veech) Gilfeather. She had lived in Brattleboro since 1902. She was a member of Centre Congregational Church, the Ladies Enterprise Society and Sedgwick Women's Relief Corps. Mrs. Newton outlived two sons: Brig. Gen. M. Stanley Newton, USMC (ret.) died in February of this year, and Lt. Col. Julius Newton, USAR, died in 1958. Four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren survive. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Ker Funeral Home by the Rev. Leonard R. Kraemer, minister of Centre Church. Cremation will follow.
