Thelma Donley Callaghan, 96, of Carmichaels, died May 11, 2014, in Pittsburgh.Mrs. Callaghan was born August 12, 1917, in Davistown, a daughter of Charles I. and Gala Rich Donley.She was the sixth generation of her family in Greene County, a direct descendant of pioneer the Rev. John Corbly (on her maternal side) and Jamie Donley, who settled in the county in the early 19th century.Mrs. Callaghan spent a major portion of her life in Carmichaels. A 1935 graduate of Cumberland Township High School, she was the editor of the first issue of the school newspaper, The Mike.In 1937, she married William J. Callaghan, who died February 5, 1977.During World War II, she worked in the Carmichaels post office and was a plane spotter for the Civil Defense.Mrs. Callaghan was a reporter for the Observer-Reporter out of the Waynesburg office for 35 years. She covered all activities in the area.A four-month celebration of the Carmichaels Bicentennial in 1967 was publicized by her. She was a charter member and director of the Greene Academy of Art, and served as publicity chairman during the restoration of the historic Greene Academy.She was publicity director of the King Coal Association and the Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Show for more than 50 years, and received service awards in 1974, 1983 and 2003.Other community involvements included: member of the board of trustees of Flenniken Public Library for more than 25 years; member and secretary of the Greene Academy Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; publicity chairman for the Carmichaels Area Chamber of Commerce, receiving its Recognition Award in 1979; ice president of the Rev. John Corbly Descendants Association for several terms; in 1981, she received the Outstanding Women's Service Award from the Junior Women's Club of Carmichaels Area; member of the Cumberland Post 400 of the American Legion Auxiliary; and a member of Carmichaels First United Methodist Church.She is survived by two daughters. ; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.(Names of the living removed per Find A Grave guidelines) Deceased are her brothers, Harold M. A service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend Reagan Fike officiating.
