Myrtle Katherine Powell Humphries, 56, of 80 Wendover Road, Malvern Hills, N.C. died unexpectedly Thursday, December 20, 1979 in an Asheville hospital.

A native of Transylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Loualliar Eylar Powell and Carrie Jane Bagwell Powell. She was a 1947 graduate of Western Carolina University and earned her master's degree in 1975.

During World War II she worked at the Pentagon as a records secretary for the chief of staff.

A teacher at Blanton's Business College, Black Mountain High School, Enka and Brevard high schools, she was currently a special education teacher at Erwin High School.

She was a member of North Carolina Association of Educators and First Baptist Church in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was the wife of the late Ralph Humphries.

She was survived by two sons, George Kelly Humphries and Paul Edward Humphries of Asheville, N.C.; and two sisters, Oleta Short of Brevard, N.C. and Dexter Galloway of Olean, New York.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 23, 1979 in Brevard First Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Mount Moriah Calvert Church Cemetery.
