United States Federal Judge, Civil Rights Figure. Serving first as a District Judge, then as a Federal Appeals Court Judge, he ruled on several cases in the 1950s and 1960s that were integral in the legal desegregation process in the South and in ending the disenfranchisement of African-American citizens. In 1956, he ruled that segregation on buses in Montgomery, Alabama, was unconstitutional (a case that stemmed from Aurelia Coleman and Rosa Parks' refusal to move to the back of a bus in favor of a white person), and in 1965, ruled people who took part in the Selma to Montgomery marches had a right to do so, nullifying Alabama Governor George W. Wallace's order prohibiting them from doing so.
