HUSBAND, WIFE DIE SAME DAY - A Ravenswood couple, the Rev. Vairl Winter and Edna Winter, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, within hours of each other. Mr. Winter, 83, passed away at the Ravenswood Care Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Winter, 78, died later Wednesday at Jackson General Hospital in Ripley, after a sudden illness.

Joint services were held Friday at the Grasslick Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Douglas Hill of the West Virginia Baptist Convention officiating. Mr. Winter was born Nov. 24, 1901, at the home place on Grasslick, son of the late Hereford and Myrtle Stewart Winter.

He was a member of the Grasslick Baptist Church where he served as pastor for 24 years. He served on the Executive Board of the West Virginia Baptist Convention and was instrumental in the planning and building of the conference center on Parchment Valley. He was a supervisory board member of the Western Soil Conservation District, and a 50-year Mason and Odd Fellow member. In 1950, he was named Rural Farmer of the Year by the Progressive Farmer magazine, and was selected to receive the Rosa O. Hall Award for Outstanding Services to Church in Town and Country Work at the American Baptist Convention in Boston, Mass.

He is survived by his son, Jack of Ripley; a daughter, Mrs. Joyce Mills of Beckley; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vera Jane Winter. His burial was at Fairplain Cemetery.

Mrs. Winter was a teacher and a housewife, was a graduate of Marshall University, a member of the Grasslick Baptist Church and a member of the G.F.W.C. Woman's Club of Ravenswood.

She was a former officer of the West Virginia Baptist Convention and former housemother at Alderson-Broaddus College.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Hugh D. Pickett. Survivors include: one son, Dr. Hugh Dale Pickett of New York, N.Y.; one daughter, Rachael Anderson of Arlington, Texas; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her burial was at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Arlington Memorial Gardens, Parkersburg.
