Knut Larsson Aurthun Nerheim was born on October 3, 1853 to Ingeborg and Lars Knutson Abo in Sauda, Norway. He was first son and second born of four children. Knut's older sister was Margaret L. Abo (b. 1851) named for her paternal grandmother, Margrethe L. Kingestad (1792-1872), did marry but had no children. His younger sister, Anne Karin Abo, (b. 1858) only survived for fifteen years and passed on in 1873. Knut's lone brother was Tore Larson Abo, born fifteen years after Knut. Tore never married.

Knut was a farmer and a road worker. He married Agota Larsdttr Saevereid (b. 1858)on May 28, 1881 in Saevereid, Norway and had six children. They were Ragnhild Knutsdttr (March 23, 1883), Lars Knutson (December 24, 1884), "Little" Lars Knutson (March 28, 1887), Erik Olai (January 8, 1889), Ingeborg Torine Nerheim (1891-1891) and Isabel Karine (September 8, 1892). Tragically, in 1894 Knut's wife Agota passed away leaving five surviving children under 12 years of age motherless. In the ensuing years Knut was remarried, wedding the younger Elen Valskar (b. April 2, 1863). The couple had four additional children, Ella (b. June 2, 1896), Aagot K. (b. April 5, 1898), Henry Olaus Kornelius Knutsen Nerheim (b. January 6, 1901) and Selma Amanda (b. June 26, 1902). Afterwards, Knut's first five surviving children departed Norway for the U.S. one by one before age seventeen without adult accompaniment. Their destination was Iowa where several of their mother's Saevereid family members had emigrated several decades earlier. Knut and Elen found themselves with a smaller family, whether by their choosing or not. Because none of Knut's own siblings had any children, his and Elen's children were the only grandchildren his parents had living in Norway. In light of this, Elen and Knut's four children likely were considered heaven sent. His first child to emigrate to America, Ragnhild Jacobson, now aged 31 returned to Norway to visit Knut and his second family during the summer of 1914. She returned to the USA aboard the SS Bergensfjord on July 23, 1914 - this just days before World War I broke out in Europe.

Ten years after, Knut passed away at age seventy on July 12, 1924. By then he had thirteen grandchildren living in the USA and more on the way. One year after Knut's death, sixth child and third daughter Isabel and her husband of ten years, Iver Wagner returned from the U.S. to Olen, Norway to visit relatives. Iver's family was also from the Olen vicinity, his parents were still living at that time. As for Elen Valskar, she outlived Knut by 29 years, never remarried, and died on November 23, 1953 at the age of ninety.
