JAMES LEMUEL ALDRIDGE was the only known child of James F. Aldridge and first wife Absoly Westbrook. James’s mother died before his father’s 2nd marriage in 1848 to Priscilla Westbrook, sister of Absoly. James had 9 siblings from his father’s 2nd marriage, and 1 sister from his father’s 3rd marriage to Mary Williams in 1873.

James grew up on his father’s plantation in the Jefferson area of Marengo Co., AL

In the 1860 Will of his grandfather, Moses Westbrook, Jr., James inherited $750, as the "heir of the deceased Absoly".

When the Civil War began in 1861, James enlisted as a Private in Co. C, 21st Alabama Regiment, CSA. His regiment fought at the Battle of Shiloh, TN in April 1862, and at the Battle of Corinth, MS in October 1862.

In August 1864, during the Battle of Mobile Bay, James was captured at Fort Gaines, Dauphin Island, AL. He was released a short time later and rejoined his unit. He was paroled at Vicksburg, MS in 1865

James never married. He was a dry goods merchant in Demopolis, Marengo Co., AL. In 1894 James was an heir of the final settlement of his grandfather, Lemuel Aldridge’s estate, in Desoto Co., MS.

James is buried in the Aldridge Cemetery with his father, mother, 2 step-mothers, and several of his half-siblings.
