Cornwell, Thayles, 97, Cornwell’s Drive-In co-owner, died Saturday in Muskogee. Service 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Smith Funeral Home Chapel.

Thayles J. Cornwell went to be with our Lord August 16, 2014. He was born January 19, 1917 in Lexington, Nebraska to Carl and Ella Conway Cornwell.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1941 and was a 1st Class Gunners Mate on the destroyer USS Mills making nine trips to England and down the Mediterranean to Africa protecting convoys from German U-Boat attacks. He received the American Campaign medal, World War II medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign medals and the Bronze Star for action after the Jared Ingersoll freighter was hit by enemy war planes in saving the crew, cargo and ship. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in June 1946. He was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard as a Staff Sergeant. He was a 50 year member of the VFW and lifetime member and officer of the Elks Club.

In 1955 he wed Madge Green who preceded him in death after 47 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his parents Carl and Ella Cornwell, his brother Leo Cornwell and his nephew Denny Cornwell.

Interment will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, 1208 S. Main St., Sapulpa, OK.
