American by Birth, Scottish by Heritage, and Christ’s by Choice. Hank McClellan’s life, highly organized as any good engineer’s life should be, grew through patriot, to civil servant, to servant for Christ.
His faith became sight Wednesday morning August 21, 2014, as Hank passed into the glory of the Lord’s presence from Ohio Health MedCentral Hospital. He was 87.
Born February 21, 1927 in Seneca, Illinois to Fred and Inez (Wills) McClellan, Hank was graduated from Seneca High School, served with the US Navy, and earned his degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University. He came to Ohio by accepting a position with the Ohio Department of Transportation, working there only a few years before becoming a partner in Shaffer, Johnston, Lichtenwalter & Associates, a firm he would serve 20 years. “Mac,” as he was known in professional circles, later worked 21 years as a partner with Richland Engineering, Ltd. until his retirement. Mac was most proud of his work on the I-71 corridor through Richland County and his design input on Ohio Route 13 south of Mansfield to Bellville. He served several terms on the Mansfield Planning Commission.
Mac’s veins ran navy blue and hunter green: the tartan colors of Clan McClellan. He embraced his Scottish roots, enjoyed the Scottish games and fondly recalled his pilgrimage to Castle MacLellan in Kirkcudbright, Scotland.
Active with his church family at Berean Baptist Church, his approachable spirit made him a favorite with even the youngest children. Hank served the past eight years as Sunday School Treasurer and Secretary, volunteered assembling the church newsletter “The Banter”, and was active with the church’s kitchen ministry for funeral dinners and Berean Gold banquets. Hank was always willing to help, as he was always willing to serve the Lord.
Hank enjoyed golfing (of course, he’s Scottish) and bowling (he taught Junior bowling at Village Lanes for years), and never turned down an opportunity to go fishing (a day spent on Lake Erie was a good day) and to fill the freezer with yellow perch.
Hank will be best remembered for his gentle spirit, quiet strength and intelligence. In every situation, Hank was the classic gentleman (even when his feline companion Autumn tried to get the best of him).
He is survived by his wife of 20 years Leona (Spohn) McClellan who describes him as “my Godsend”; stepchildren Brent Thompson of Mansfield, Craig (Dr. Ayesha Hasan) Thompson of Upper Arlington, Tami (Adam) Kuhn of Clover, SC, Jared (Annie) Thompson of Grandview Heights, Hettie Hofer, Leslie (Larry) Chaffin and Monet Wade all of Mansfield, and Cindy Swanger of Ashland; step grandchildren Tabby, Kristina, Ashton, Forrest, Caleb, Kieran, Kamran, Addison, Cayden, Avery, Greyson, Amanda, Katie, and Christy; step great grandchildren Shane, Jackie, and Connor; a sister Mary Lou (Wes) Larson of Seneca, IL; and sisters-in-law Lois McClellan of Delafield, WI, and Greta McClellan of Huntington Beach, CA,
He was preceded in death by his first wife Jacqueline McClellan; stepson Kenneth Swanger; step grandson Sean McClellan; sister Norma McClellan and brothers Ernest and Robert McClellan.
The McClellan family will receive friends Monday, August 25, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where his funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Pastors Jim Berry and Craig Hamm will speak. Burial will follow in Little Washington Cemetery, where Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will hold graveside military honors.
