Mrs. Birdie Mae Smith-Allen, died September 11, 2004, at the University Nursing Home in Durant, MS. She was born July 17, 1908, in Attala County, Mississippi; the first born and only daughter born so the late Alto and Katie Bell (Patrick) Smith.

She received her education in the Public Schools of Attala County. She had a desire to share this knowledge with others and did so by becoming a Public School Teacher for a period of tune in Scott County Mississippi.

Early in life she met and married the late Mr. Willie Matt Dodd. To this union was born their one and only child Alice B. Dodd, who preceded her in death.

At some point in time she took up residence in Dayton, Ohio; where she was employed by the Belmont Hotel for many years. Life would later lead her back to Mississippi, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The stay was short in Milwaukee. So she returned to Mississippi and married Mr. A. T. Allen, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Allen was gifted and enjoyed sewing. Her greatest joy came when she completed a garment and had the pleasure of showing it off to everyone that came within her sight. She would even model the apparel for you to make sure that you saw how it fit her (your approval was a must). She did domestic work and was a cook in and around Kosciusko, Mississippi. Sooner or later everyone knew Ms. Birdie Mae.

She was a member of Damascus Primitive Baptist Church, known to many as the Hard Shell Church, and by her nieces and nephews as grandpa's church.

As you notice there is the absence of many of her friends and playmates. There were called home earlier. We are thankful to God for the many long years that we were blessed with her presence. She will truly be missed. "I am the oldest" has been replaced with her cousin Cora Lee of Chicago, IL.

Mrs. Allen was the oldest of five brothers: Meashack, John Al, Guy, J. D., L. T., and one adopted sister Olivia, and stepsister, Verna.

In God's care she leaves to mourn her loss: grandchildren: Dian, Abraham, Stanley, Willie, Harvey, Elvin, and Kenneth of Wisconsin; stepchildren, Carrie Mae, Susie, and Minnie of New York; 13 step grand children, 24 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren; one brother J. D. (Earmon) Smith of Saginaw, Michigan; sister-in-laws: Cornelius and Susie Smith, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

We are grateful to her granddaughter Landress for standing so unselfishly by her side over the many years, and her niece Maudell for the many visits that she made while she resided in Vaiden and Durant nursing facilities, insuring that she was getting the proper care. We are thankful to all who assisted with her care.

"The deep pain that is felt at the death of every friendly soul arises from the feeling that there is in every individual something which is inexpressible, peculiar to him or her alone and is therefore absolutely irretrievably lost." Schoepenhauer.
