Charles Alexander of Sonoma County's Pioneer Succumbs to Illness

HEALDSBURG, CAL., June 28. - Charles Alexander, one of the most prominent and respected of Northern Sonoma's pioneers, passed away yesterday evening evening after a brief illness. Mr. Alexander was born in St. Clair County, Illinois, on March 20, 1920, and passed his early youth in his native State. In 1850 he journeyed across the plains to California, and on his arrival here settled in Alexander Valley, that vast tract of land being at that time the sole property of his uncle Cyrus Alexander, to whom it had been deeded by its original owner, William Fitch. The tract included 17,000 acres and was given by Mr. Fitch to Mr. Alexander as payment for a winter's labor.

For thirty years Mr. Alexander lived In the valley which bears his name and amassed a comfortable fortune, owning more land than could be conveniently traveled over in a day. At the end of that time he and his family removed 10 Healdsburg, where he had since made his home. In October fifty-five years ago Mr. Alexander was wedded to Achsa H. Smith. He was a consistent member of the M. E. church and a prominent figure in church work, as well as an active worker in the cause of temperance. His was the busiest and best type of manhood, and he had the undivided respect and esteem of the residents of Russian River and Alexander valleys.

The body of the deceased will be laid to rest in Oak Mound Cemetery to-morrow by the side of his devoted wife, who preceded him across the River Styx three years ago.
