Renate Elisabeth Eulig, daughter of Werner Eulig and Elisabeth Mueller.

Renate's early education was interrupted several times by war events and health issues (scarlet fever and diphtheria). In 1953, she had a run-in with the Ministry for State Security (Staatssischerheitsdienst, aka Stasi), and was compelled to flee to West Germany. She continued her education in various locations, enrolling in the School of Translation and Interpreting Studies at the University of Mainz in Germersheim, specializing in Russian and English.

In addition to her studies at University, she was also a nursing student at the hospital in Gerebron in 1956. As part of that program she worked for a time as nurse at the Claybury Hospital in Essex, England, giving her an opportunity to become more fluent in English.

In 1957 she married Jerold Huggins and moved with him to the U.S. where he continued his schooling at Everett Junior College and the University of Washington. While in Everett, Renate worked in the surgical ward of the local hospital. With Jerry, she had two children, Albert in 1959 and Elizabeth in 1961. In the late 1960s she resumed her education at the University of Washington, completing a B.A. in German literature, and receiving a teaching certificate in 1970. She moved with her family to Forks, Washington, where she taught school and eventually took charge of the local library, a branch of the North Olympic Library System. In 1974 she and Jerry were divorced.

In 1976 she married Charles Tolman, whom she had known since 1959. This added four step-children to her family: Richard (1959), Jeannette (1961), Peter (1964), and Eric (1966). Renate joined Charles in Victoria, BC where he had been teaching at the university since 1964. In Victoria, she worked first in teaching and then in healthcare until her retirement in 2001. Renate and Charles moved to North Saanich in 2003.

Renate fought a long battle with cancer, suffering many complications that were particularly difficult in the last year of her life. She was an exceptionally generous and loving person who will be sorely missed by all her family and many friends.
