Former director of Mesquite Texas nonprofit Nancy Upton was a caring mother and giver, working as the director of Mesquite Social Services for 20 years. Ms. Upton, 67, died Tuesday of an aneurysm. Services will be 4 p.m. today at Grace Episcopal Church in Mesquite. "She didn't need all the fancy money and the big office," said her Oldest son. "She was just there to help people. "Along, with working at the nonprofit organization, Ms. Upton was involved in Boy Scouts, the Parent-Teacher Association and the Women's Republican Party. She was also Mesquite's Citizen of the Year in 1985. Her son said one thing he will remember about his mother's influence is the importance of giving. He said she took classes to become a teacher early in life and was involved in organizations he was in, even after he had left them. "She, like most people in the business - they're there to help people out." he said. "That was the way she was. She got into something and kept going. "Ms. Upton's most successful projects was providing transportation to seniors and others who need transportation help. It is now the city-run Mesquite Transportation for the Elderly and Disabled. Her son said he is impressed with the way his mother raised him and his siblings. "She did a good job raising us," he said. "To her, it was being yourself, but at the same time, to not be self-absorbed. "Her youngest son said "She created a legacy that I'm trying to follow," "She created a place where a lot of people loved her". Nancy enjoyed, quilting, reading and gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Upton. She had 3 sons and a daughter and 3 grandchildren. Nancy was born in PA and grew up there, as well as Ohio, She also attended college in PA. After marrying Richard they moved to Florida, Indiana and then Texas.
