Kutztown Professor H. S. Eisenbrown Dies

Dr. Harry S. Eisenbrown, 69, of 228 W. Franklin St., Topton, professor of German language and literature at Kutztown State College, died Saturday morning at his home.

Bor n in Reading, he was a son of the late Charles S. and Alice (Kauffman) Eisenbrown.

A graduate of Reading Hich School, he pursued his interest in foreign laguages by attending the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree.

A fter graduating, he traveled in Europe, touring Spain, Italy and France and spent a winter term at the University of Grenoble in France.

H e then studied at the University of Heidelberg in German, where he earned his doctorate in philosophy and met and married Ingeborg Adolf whose father was a chemist and former teacher at the university.

Professor in Berlin

In 1930, he returned to the United States and spent some time taking study groups to Europe. He eventually became an instructor in German at Dartmouth and Princeton universities. In 1937, he took a position as exchange professor at the University of Berlin, where he stayed during World War II.

Near the end of the war, he moved to the University of Goettingen, where he worked as an interpreter for the U.S. Army and taught Army personnel.

Returning again to the United States in 1949, he taught at Wagner College on Staten Island, then moved on to other teaching assignments, joining the KSC faculty in 1961.

He was eventually named a professor of German and is credited with a "tremendous" growth of the German department at the school. He also served on several other committees of the college staff.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by one sister, Mary C., widow of K. Raymond Titlow, Laureldale, and one brother, Paul D. of Allentown.
