Reta was the only child of Emma & Clarence Rawlings. She was the granddaughter of Mormon pioneers who crossed the plains in covered wagons. She was born in Salt Lake City just prior to the turn of the 20th Century just before Teddy Roosevelt became President. She was raised in Salt Lake City. Even though she was an only child, she had plenty of cousins to play with. As a child she nearly died from scarlet fever. Then she got burned by some hot tea on her legs & had scars her whole life.

As a young girl, she learned to play the piano & sing. She gave her first vocal/piano recital on April 28, 1915 in Salt Lake at the Little Theatre at age 15. She attended LDS High School. She graduated from LDS Business College in 1920. She was a member of the LDS Glee Club & the choir there.

Becoming a classical piano & voice teacher was her life-long passion. Her first job was teaching voice in Cody, Wy at age 19, just after Buffalo Bill died.

Returning to Salt Lake, at age 22 she married Delbert Duncan on April 12, 1922. The couple moved to Denver where Bert got a job as a bookkeeper. Her parents also moved to Denver for Clarence's RR job.

She and my grandfather Bert had one daughter. They divorced Dec. 4, 1925. Now single, she taught piano lessons in Denver & was one of very few who went to the home of her students. She taught voice, piano & organ for 55 years.

Later, she married Harold L. Beck June 2, 1942 in Castle Rock, CO. They had a wonderful, long marriage. They traveled to Salt Lake Temple where both were endowed
Apr. 7, 1955. They served as Mormon missionaries for 8 years. He passed away in 1962.

She later married Arnold (Scotch) Rawlings, a 2nd cousin, on Nov. 24, 1965. She played piano and he sang to "Harbor Lights" and "To rah loo rah" He passed away in 1979.

My Nana was very special to me and I adored her. She taught me piano and a lot of life lessons. She was a terrific seamstress, sewing all my and my mother's clothes. She was also a wonderful cook.

Services were held Mar. 4, 1980 @ LDS Church 999 E. Tufts Ave. Englewood, Co. She rests beside her beloved husband Harold. She was 80 years young.

The music lives on....bless you Nana.
