Alverta, also known as Verdie, was the mother to 14 children. She married Thomas Carson Whittington in 1877. Verdie was my dad's grandmother and he best recalls how sweet she was to him and his siblings, often walking to their home from her own and sharing candy or a sweet treat she made for them. Eventually she lived with their family after her husband passed away and was taken care of by her daughter-in-law Mertie up until the time of her passing. When I asked my dad to sum up Verdie in only a few words he said "She was as sweet as honey from a beehive".
