Janet Mae Shrack was a daughter of Orlando Richard and Reva Crystal (Trehearne) Shrack of Hartford City, Indiana. She graduated from the local high school in 1946. She was a member of the Nu Phi Mu sorority, Young Democrats Club, and the Girls' Missionary Guild of the E.U.B. church. She had been employed at the J. J. Newberry Company before her marriage.

Janet was married on November 24, 1949 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Hartford City to James Richard Ford, son of James Oscar and Alpha Omega (Drabenstott) Ford of Montpelier, Indiana. They had three daughters: Linda Louise (1953), Lisa Ann (1960) and Susan Elizabeth (1962) Ford; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Janet's husband, James Richard Ford, was a great-grandson of Dr. James and America Ford of Wabash, Indiana.
