Sarah Ann Defoe was born to Andrew Marion "Mine" Defoe and Charity Bradford Defoe sometime in December of 1875 in Pinewood, Hickman Co., Tennessee.

At the tender age of thirteen, she was married to Dallas Cornelia Sanford in Tiptonville, Obion Co., TN. The couple had three daughters Viola, Leona "Ona" and Millie. In the early years of their marriage the couple remained in Tennessee, but sometime before 1900 the family moved to Alamogordo, Otero Co., NM where census records show that Dallas was a trimmer at a sawmill.

By 1908 Sarah and her three daughters had moved to Township 3, McCurtain Co., Oklahoma where her parents were living. She married Thomas Jefferson Provence on May 25, 1908. Her new husband was 32 years her senior, and had lost his third wife the year before. Together, I believe, they had three children the first being an infant that did not survive, Tommie (female), and Robert Jefferson Provence. In 1916, Mr. Provence passed away.

In 1917, Sarah married Jacob Floid Smith together they had one known daughter Delphia Florene Smith. It is believed that Sarah passed away at the age of 47 in Pollard, McCurtain Co., Oklahoma. Sarah raised her six children along with numerous step-children from her second and third marriages.

Gravesite Details

Burial would most likely be in one of the following cemeteries: Haworth, Pollard, Eagle or Tom. No records for her burial have been found, but there are 3-4 unmarked graves in the Pollard Cemetery next to her second husband T. J. Provence.
