Alexander Gatherer Russell was born in Musquodoboit, NS. He grew up in Truro, attended the seminary in Princeton, New Jersey and was pastor for 35 years at the Presbyterian Church in Oyster Bay, New York. He married first in 1876 Eliza Hoxie Norris. They had 3 sons: Henry Norris, Gordon McGregor and Alexander. Eliza died in 1903 in Oyster Bay and is buried in Princeton, New Jersey. Alexander married second, in Truro, on 16 July 1908 his childhood sweetheart Sarah Barry Calkin, widow of Abram Harris Patterson.
