Daniel Barnes was a partner in the Richard P. Buck & Co. firm, a shipping company. He was also a past President of the Seaman's Bank for Savings, a director of the Mechanics and Metals National Bank and a regent of the Long Island College Hospital, as well as Chairman of its board of finance.

He was a great-grandson of Roger Sherman, one of the committee of five that drafted the Declaration of Independence and one of its signers.
